Visiting Houston? Your options are virtually endless, given the city’s hustling shopping and sports scenes, couples with its natural charms and its unique place in history.
Houston, we don’t have a problem — not if you’ve been longing to check out the city’s huge part of the U.S. Space Program. Space Center Houston houses actual space artifacts, such as the Mercury 9 capsule, while also offering “meet the astronauts” lunches and events. You can also take a tram tour through such exhibits as NASA’s Mission Control and Rocket Park.
The Great Outdoors
Rather than cooping your kids up in a motel room, run them around in one of Houston’s many recreation centers. Options include horseback riding at Cypress Trails, taking a Sam Houston Boat Tour through the Port of Houston Authority, or going to Cockrell Butterfly Center.
Get a dose of cultural or a close-up look at history by visiting one or more of Houston’s famous museums, including The Houston Museum of Natural Science, the Museum of Fine Arts-Houston, and Children’s Museum of Houston.
Visiting the animals is always a hit when travelling, and Houston has a couple of great options. The Houston Zoo boasts everything from gorillas and rhinos to snakes and birds. The Downtown Aquarium has over 200 species of aquatic life, along with rides and “undersea” restaurants and snack bars.
Houston boasts six big-league sports teams, along with exciting collegiate teams. Before you visit Houston, check out team schedules and look into scoring some tickets. Depending on when you visit, you might be able to attend a baseball game with the Houston Astros, see the Houston Rocket shoot some hoops, watch the Houston Texans play football, or check out the women’s soccer team, the Houston Dash, among other exciting options.
Shop ‘Til You Drop
You haven’t seen Houston until you’ve visiting its famous shopping mecca, The Galleria. The Galleria is the fourth-largest mall nationwide, with 400 stores and restaurants, not to mention two hotels, two swimming pools, a skating rink, seven beauty salons, and a sprawling area. Naturally, valet parking is available.
The Music Scene
As a big city with a down-home vibe, Houston sits at the crossroads of several musical styles, offering something for everyone. Take in a concert at the Houston Symphony or Grand Opera, check out Broadway-calibre musicals at the Hobby Center for the Performing Arts, get down at the House of Blues, or get your country on at The Cynthia Woods Mitchell Pavilion.
Like most major cities, Houston prides itself on a global restaurant scene, with plenty of barbecue and country-style eateries thrown into the mix. Top-rated restaurants include Brennan’s of Houston, Vic and Anthony’s Steakhouse, and Peli Peli.
Date nights are hot nights in Houston. Along with the restaurant scene, clubs and pubs are big. Take a Old Town Houston Historic Pub Tour, or have some fun at Pete’s Dueling Piano Bar, as well as comedy at the Houston Improv.
If you like a little risk with your sport, check out the Sam Houston Race Park. Not only can you watch the horses while dining or hitting one of its racetrack bars, but you can place bets, or simply watch some important horse events, such as thoroughbred and American quarter horse racing.
